“It was really assless.”
“…what? Oh. Useless. It was really useless.”
“Yeah, assless!”
(this happened three more times – the student, and thankfully, the class, remained oblivious as to why Miss Amanda kept smirking…)
My 5th form students finished their unit on Holidays and Parties, so we celebrated by making party invitations! I promised them I would show everyone their wonderful work – tomorrow we’re hanging them up on the school art display board for the whole school to see!

Wonderful turn out for the first week of English Club(s). I’ve decided to run three English clubs, separated by age/ability. The first club is for 5th and 6th formers (although younger students who want to attend are welcome), and the first meeting of the club had 12 attendees. I showed them maps of the US and Texas, and lots of pictures of Texas – and I explained, with some success, what exactly the Alamo is, and its significance to Texas’ history. The club for 9th and 10th formers had 11 attendees, but apparently 9A never got the memo about when and where the English club was, so another 5 students from that class will be joining us next Monday, bringing the potential total up to 16. The club for 7th and 8th formers was far-and-away the most popular – 23 kids showed up!
All-in-all, 45 kids showed up for English club this week, and everyone was all smiles and energy. Fingers crossed the level of interest and participation stays high!
Some funny moments this week:
…while grading the workbooks of one of my 6th form classes:
“I am fond of reading, aren’t I?”
“Where is your school library, aren’t there?”
“Why am I fond of reading detective stories?”
“The book teaches me to recommend because I like reading.”
“The book teaches me Harry Potter Mowgli.”
“He is teeth in Hogwarts. He is teeth in magic wi fard.”
“My favorite story is is Wonderland by Alice. Character is Lewis Carroll. He/She is pretty, brave and adventure!”
I leave you with the following poem my second graders have memorized:
Spring is green.
Summer is bright.
Autumn is yellow.
Winter is white.
